United Nations Day marks the anniversary of the 1945 creation of the United Nations. The focus of this year's celebration is the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), along with the theme “Equality, Freedom and Justice for All”. NCSS Board Members Attend EU Brussels Study Tour
From October 1-4, 2023, a group of educators from the United States and Canada traveled to Brussels, Belgium, for the first-ever U.S. Educators EU study visit, funded by the Delegation of the European Union to the United States. This group included four educators nominated by the National Council for the Social Studies. The experience taught participants all about the European Union, its institutions, and the role of educators in enhancing transatlantic relations. Further details can be found here.

Meeting Global Educators On Monday, October 23, NCSS Executive Director Dr. Lawrence Paska present a keynote address on the importance of global education in the social studies at a launch event for the Euro Challenge at the offices of the European Union Delegation to the United States in Washington, DC.
Later that morning, he met with Burmese educators participating in the US Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program to discuss issues including academic freedom, teaching about religion, teaching about indigenous nations and peoples, and civic learning in social studies education nationwide. This event was held at the Meridian International Center in Washington, DC.

2024 National Assessment Governing Board Nominations
The Board that oversees the country’s only national evaluation of what students know and can do is seeking nominees for positions to be appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Education in 2024. The National Assessment Governing Board oversees the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as The Nation’s Report Card. Board Members are national leaders working to innovate and modernize NAEP, ensuring results stay meaningful, relevant, and useful to stakeholders across time. Nominations are due Oct. 31.
