    Initially proposed by Indigenous representatives at a 1977 UN conference, Indigenous Peoples' Day (October 9) was not formally commemorated by a president until 2021. The holiday's purpose is to recognize and honor Native American communities and culture, and to reject the celebration of the historically violent European colonization of North America. Read more.

    As a proud member of the National Media Literacy Alliance (NAMLE), NCSS invites you to join us for the 9th annual Media Literacy Week beginning October 23.     Supporting Readiness Through Vital Civic Empowerment

    As a partner on this program with the Education Development Center (EDC), NCSS is pleased to announce Supporting Readiness through Vital Civic Empowerment (SRVCE), a free new high school civics curriculum funded by the Department of Defense. SRVCE blends inquiry-based civic learning, media literacy education, and exploration of public service careers to prepare high school students to be active citizens. Watch the introductory video, or explore the curriculum.

    As a partner with the American Historical Association (AHA) on their Mapping the Landscape of Secondary US History Education project, NCSS is pleased to share this article on inquiry-based learning in history classrooms.
