Announce Joint Award Program
National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and the Kaur Foundation are proud to announce three new annual awards to honor social studies teaching and leadership excellence in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
The Cultural Literacy Award;
The Religious Literacy Award; and
The DEI Instructional Innovation Award.
Nominations for the DEI awards open in Spring 2023. The first co-sponsored awards are scheduled to be given at the 103rd NCSS Annual Conference in Nashville, TN, in December 2023. Read the full press release announcing the awards here.
NCSS Celebrates Excellence in Social Studies at #NCSS2022
National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) honored several individuals and groups for their incredible work, service, and dedication to the social studies profession at the 102nd NCSS Annual Conference:
LaGarrett J. King Presented with 2022 Spirit of America Award
NCSS and Social Studies School Service are pleased to co-present the 2022 Spirit of America Award to LaGarrett J. King, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Social Studies Education and Founding Director of the Center for K-12 Black History and Racial Literacy Education at the University at Buffalo.
The Spirit of America Award was created to give recognition to an individual who has made a significant contribution that exemplifies the “American Democratic Spirit.” The award honors persons who follow their conscience and act against current thinking in order to stand up for equity, freedom, and the American spirit of justice.

Celebrated for Distinguished Careers and Research
The Jean Dresden Grambs Distinguished Career Research Award recognizes professionals who have made extensive contributions to knowledge concerning significant areas of social studies education through meritorious research. 2020-2021 recipient Terrie Epstein, Ph.D., (left) and 2021-2022 recipient Joseph Kahne, Ph.D., (right) were both honored for their research and incredible careers at the #NCSS2022 President's Breakfast.
Carolyn Herbst and Scott Waring Honored for
Outstanding Service to NCSS
NCSS Immediate Past President Anton Schulzki virtually awarded the 2021 Outstanding Service Award to Carolyn Herbst and Scott Waring, Ph.D., at the 101st NCSS Annual Conference. At #NCSS2022, NCSS restated its gratitude for their service by presenting them with honorary plaques. Alongside the plaques, Herbst and Waring have received lifetime memberships in NCSS.
Elections are Open! Vote for Your New Board Members & Officers
Access to the ballot was provided to all individual members in good standing as of October 15, 2022. Eligible voters received an email from YesElections.com with instructions and voting credentials on December 5, 2022. Learn about the candidates and their position statements here.

Apply to Serve on the Rho Kappa Advisory Council
NCSS is currently accepting applications to serve on the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society Advisory Council. Rho Kappa and Junior Rho Kappa are the only national organizations for middle school and high school students recognizing excellence in the field of social studies. Members of the Advisory Council must be full-time middle school or high school teachers whose primary teaching responsibilities are in the field of social studies. Learn the requirements and apply for the Advisory Council by January 4, 2023.
Send Us Your Webinar or Podcast Proposals
NCSS is looking to provide a diverse selection of online learning opportunities for all levels and disciplines of social studies. Members are encouraged to submit their ideas for webinars or podcasts to the year-round call for proposals.
NCSS Webinars are usually one hour in length, including Q&A. They are typically scheduled on Tuesdays at 7 pm Eastern Time to allow for participation in all time zones, though other time options are available. If your topic is very broad, consider narrowing it down or submitting a series of webinars.
If submitting for an NCSS podcast, the recording time is typically 45-60 minutes in a hosted Q&A format, in which it will be edited down to a 30-40 minutes program for listeners.
